I want to determine the actual speed of the network connection in my LAN..It is quite a big network with 10 switches..each swith has about 15 pc hosts.. ANyone know how i can do this??? Plus if possible do it in windows??

What do you mean by actual speed in the network connection. Such measurements of speed is rather dynamic, because if one PC can be heavily accessing data, it could eventually slow down the speed for another PC.
Alternatively, you can try Speed Test (search in Google) and test the speed when you tried to access the Internet. For network speed check, it is basically down to the network's administrator role to determine that.

I think one of the easiest ways would be to just put a big file on a http server on one of the machines and then you can download it from another on the network. Then the browser you use to download it will tell you the speed.

Yep, There are many speedtest which test you connection speed kb and ping , upload speed . or you can do what quantumstate says but the speedtest is better and takes 1 min ,
