View Full Version : Reputations and Upgrades

We are still writing up the rules on reputations and upgrades but this seems like a good time to explain the basics.

At the bottom left of every post you should be able to see a pair of scales (amongst other icons). By clicking these you can leave reputation points for a members post, positive and negative. You should always leave a comment explaining why you have left reputation.

If somebody is spamming you could leave an 'I disapprove' rep but explain why, so they can improve in the future. Whilst if you read a really informative post or even an interesting topic leave an 'I approve' comment, again explaing why.

Members do not know who has left a comment (mods and admins do) so if you do not want to be anonymous add your name at the beginning of the comment e.g. 'ST - Great reputation explanation :)'

There are also rules in place (in the background) to prevent the system from being abused, and if we do find people attempting to abuse the system you can guess the rep that will be received. Like Google the exact rules are a secret ;) but to summarize
- You can't vote for yourself (that was obvious)
- Votes off more valuable members have more weight
- Voting repeatedly for the same person helps nobody
- Votes without a valid comment or reason will be ignored
- The more reputation you have the more weight your vote has (and vice versa)

To see votes left for you just go to your CP, if you cannot see anything that is because you have not yet received any rep points. Hovering the mouse over the icon next to anybodies post count will give you an idea of their reputation.

Any questions post away and I'm sure somebody will try to enlighten you on how this all works.

In the near future upgrades will be based on reputation.

This sounds great ST. This is just another reason that keeps HM above all other hosting communities. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be trouble for you guys from people attempting to abuse it. There's nothing worse than fools trying to take advantage of new features people spend alot of time on that are provided to improve everyone elses experience. I'm sure you have it all figured out though. Thanks again, you guys are great!

Personally, I think maybe the scale icon should be changed. I don't think most users will really notice, know, or care what it is. Maybe you could move it up above the report and online buttons, and then make it bigger or add some text to it when you are fully done with it. Unless, of course, you want it to be a more hidden thing.

This is the best feature I have been waiting for. Now people can spam all they want (within reason.. duh..): it won't help them at all. Bwahahaha!

Sage Tech, I can see who gave the reputation.

It says
Thread | Date | Posted by | Comment
Under "Posted by" it says who gave me the reputation.

Also, how did I get a netral reputation on my post? I got a comment and a grey icon and it didn't bring up or down my points.

Thanks for pointing that out Doc, must admit I prefer it not to be secretive as it will discourage people leaving rep without good reason (I must have found how to turn that on by accident). Can you PM me the details so I can check it out.

Sometimes rep can be left with out the points counting, e.g. rep off somebody with too few posts, low rep, etc. There are other rules to keep the system fair and prevent abuse of the system :).

Although I am not really a big fan of reputation/style systems, I do think it will work for this site.

Good job sage for bringing this out, and I hope it all works out well! :)

ahhh, was going to ask what all this 'reputation' lark was about, but didn't know which forum was the right forum to ask that sort of question, or if someone else had asked about it before and really didn't want to spam ;)

It's funny i'm having a hard time using the search option - though it's probably just me.

This is a great new feature, and should help achieve exactly what Host Matrix aims for. The question is how many people will be bothered to leave reputation points, however - perhaps there should be some bonus for actually leaving feedback.

I think if you get more reputation you get more bars, and it will turn red if you get negative. If you hover your mouse on it, (the green bar) you will see what package they are eligible for.
