I've noticed a few peoples avatars are way too big in both size and dimension. The file size problem hurts our bandwidth usage and also degrades the reading experience for other readers. IPB does scale the images but the underlying problem is still there.
As I am sure members are aware, changes are afoot at HM (all for the good) and avatars could be a problem so could everybody please ensure that their own avatar is of a relevent dimension (approx 100 * 100 pixels) and that the filesize is not excessive (approx 10KB max).
I have PMed a few members about this but don't have the time or resource to find them all.
If you avatar is greater than 100*100 pixels, simply scale in an appropriate graphics package and re-upload, it will probably look exactly the same (if not better) as the scaled one does now.
Thanks

You can set in IPB the max KB limit for avatars, and their size :D.
Admin CP --> General Settings --> Member settings.
If I remember correctly :P.
But it IS in member settings, so go there :).

Thanks Rexy,
I'm still getting used to IPB (not for much longer though :))
Those settings only work for uploaded avatars , we have a lot of remotely linked ones that bypass those settings.
However I have now found where to turn off auto scaling so I'll probably do that so members can see the offending avatars. So if you haven't checked do so now before the world sees :).

No problem, I'm still learning the crazy 2.0.X ACP myself. Today I screwed up our forum with a store mod :).

Remotely linked avatars have now been disabled.
All avatars must either be chosen from our pre-installed ones or uploaded (max file size 15KB) . You can do both these options from the avatar section of your Control Panel.

Looks like mine still works :P Also, what's wrong with linking to external ones, that dosnt hurt hm's bandwidth.

It degrades performance as it doesn't matter where the images are they still need to be downloaded. It also messes up the soon to be move.
