My mother is a amertur photographer. She has a D100 from Nikon. It's waybetter. That's all I know. It's more durable if you use it in the outdorrs. But if it's for other stuff, go for the D70

At uni I use a Nikon Coolpix 5000 and they're excellent - the best camera I have ever (ever) used. Don't know how much the price is on one of them but it's a couple of years old so I reckon you'd be able to pick up the 5000 model (or maybe even a better one) for under $1000.

The documentation provided with the camera is top-notch, meaning that you can easily get to grips with all the functions of the camera, and there is also a company that makes QTVR panorama tripod sets for the Nikon range for fairly cheap. If you want me to find out who they are PM me and I'll get you the info.

Canada, if you had any experience with what you refer to as REAL photography then you would surely know that the camera is just a tool and the real skill is in the composition of the image and correct lighting. Family photos can also be taken with a Nikon D100 and professional photos can also be taken with a Coolpix.

The Coolpix packs enough features to enable the user to take professional photographs. I have taken professional quality photgraphs with a Coolpix 5000 (I can provide these if anyone wishes to see them). As have others on my course. As have my lecturers. And with a $1,000 budget there will be money left to invest into a tripod, case, spare battery, lens or similar accessory.

I would not try to argue that the Coolpix was better than the D100 but what I try to do in my posts is provide people with an informative answer that reflects on my personal experience.

But seriously, thanks for the most unimaginative, uninformative and childish piece of spam that I have seen in a while on here. It was very clever.

Not to be pickie, but both Rebel (latest model Rebel XT) and D70 are entry level DSLRs. Do you currently own any lens or accessories? If not, do not forget to include those in your budget. Also have a look at www.dpreview.com for some information and reviews on various digital cameras.
