Was wondering what everyones take on paying for website promotion? Is it worth investing into? Sites like BlastEngine & Enhance have monthly rates plans and say that they can get you the most hits. Thought I would see what you all thought.
Also, someone suggested to me that listing your site in groups is one of the best ways to promote. What do you think?

Firstly I'd ask 2 questions, what do you wish to achieve out of promotion and how much do you want to spend.
IMO services like BlastEngine are a waste of time and stopped being useful years ago. I've not heard of Enhance, they may be worth a look.
I find Google Adwords is a good PPC program but can get expensive, so that depends how much a visitor is worth to you.
To promote on the cheap exchange links with acquaintances , include your URL iyou signature on forums, newsgroup posts and emails. Also submit your site to free directories. Find sites that will be of similar interest to your readers and ask if they would like to exchange links, always be courteous and make your emails personal (think how you would respond to the email that you are sending).

Enhance says this:
Our simplest and most popular advertising format.
Display your company's title, description and URL whenever users from our partner network type in the keywords you've selected. You see exactly how much it costs to advertise in first, second or third place for any keyword or phrase. Best of all, you only pay for visitors that click on your links.
They say it is pay per click but do not give a price until you fill out their mile long form.
I own a homebrew shop and will have my website up by the end of the month. When I go to google and type in "homebrew supplies", the entire page fills up with homebrew stores. I want to be amoung the top listed without paying to much.
I will start with the newsgroups, forums, directories, and so on to begin with and check out adwords. Someone I work with uses adwords. He says it really works good, but can get expensive like you said.
Thanx for the tips
