What programs do you guys use to make your site? I have Microsoft FrontPage on this computer and on my brother's Mac he has Macromedia Dreamweaver MX which I know is a pretty good program. I also have Studio MX.
So which ones do you guys use? Also can you guys help me understand what FTP and MySQL is?

I use Dreamweaver MX 2004 (code mode only), Microsoft Notepad, Adobe Photoshop CS and Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7. I test with Firefox, IE, Mozilla and Opera, and then upload with Filezilla.
FTP - File Ttransfer Protocol. A protocol which lets you up/download files easily (Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is what is used for downloading general HTML files, images etc.)
MySQL - My Structured Querly Language. An opensource database, that is often used in conjunction with PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor), a SSL which is also opensource.
If you are new to designing Web Sites, might want to try Microsoft Front Page. It's pretty easy to do, ( Very MS Office Like ) and might get you going faster.
Just a thought.

That is true, I am embrassed to say that I use Front page. But it's not my idea. I am just too poor and inexprience. For FTP instructions:
1. Get an FTP program like....SmartFTP
2. Log in: username.hostmatrix.org, password, username
3. Goto public html
4. Drag all your website files, to the public html!
5. finished, then close the FTp program and check your amazing website
Which is probolay better than mine :P

Front page is possibliest the easiest web page desing program but if your new to html then you should also have a good html website *www.htmlgoodies.com* running in the background for reference.
also i would like to know does studio mx run on win me??
dreamweaver? frontpage? how about notepad :)
I used notepad/dreamweaver/photoshop for my web designs. i think there are enough of these "which program do you use? frontpage or dreamweaver?" threads.. just read thorugh the forums, everyone has answered it like ten times.

:P FrontPage, evenatually you should get something better, or just use notepad. Personally I use HTML-Kit for small projects, and Dreamweaver the new version for anything big. As for designing graphics: Photoshop CS and Imageready CS. There you have it, my web designing tools. :D

HTML/CSS: Frontpage, though I just type the code and use frontpage to quick preview it or fill in extra content, and I like the easy to use navigation with the sorting/filing etc. of the program.
Graphics: was an OLD edition of Fireworks, but it decided to stop working, so now its Photoshop 7.

I know this thread has been dealt with before but I have just discovered a fantastic HTML editor that is totally free (including for commercial use so you can legally make money with it!) Anyone who is familiar with the Dreamweaver 'Code View' but can't afford Macromedia price-tags such definately give it a look. It's called 1st Page 2000 and you can find it at http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage2.shtml.

For HTML, PHP, and CSS I use simpletext on the Mac or notepad on my PC.
As for the graphics, the only program I have on my mac is Appleworks... which sucks. On my PC I use a bunch of freeware programs that all suck and all of them only do one of the things I need... it isn't even worth it anymore...
I really want to download the program to make flash but 99MB... on dial up?!? It would almost be faster to learn a programing language and make my own program to make flash in. :P
Why can't you make flash in Notepad/simpletext?

don't get me wrong but warez does have its advantages... :P
anyway, from the not-free software dreamweaver is definitly the best of the best. Photoshop is also a very good tool but u wont get to work with html

Nah, FP is balls. The code it produces in WYSIWYG mode is appalling, and its CSS support is extremely limited. Although DW's self-generated code isn't brilliant either, it has pretty good CSS support, and a much more usable interface than FP.
I code by hand using PhpEdit, but if you're in for the WYSIWYG (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage), your best bet is NVU (http://www.nvu.com/), an open-source editor in the works (from Mozilla)

I used that program for awhile but after a bit it would crash everytime I tried to save a file. ;) Go with HTML-Kit or preferbaly DW. Or even the one Tim suggested, it looks nice. :)

Here's a question, in WYSIWYG editors can you type in code and see your page update in real time? Or does it only go the other way around?
Edit: An, grammar errors? :P

Ugh, for your images use Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004.
Unlike Photoshop, it has a VERY LOW learning curve.

1) FrontPage, because it's easy to use.
2) PhotoShop, because you can do anything with it.
3) On a related note: ThumbsPlus to manage my graphics.
In my experience, folks who know what they're doing seem to favor NotePad and PhotoShop.

Doesn't Evrsoft's 1st Page have some kind of latent WinBomb Trojan embedded in some of the JavaScript button scripts? I know it causes the PC to craSh more often of something. (Like that is really unusual anyway!)

I used to use first page, and its the first I've heard of that...
I use Adobe Photoshop CS and Macromedia Dreamweaver mainly, but sometimes use 3ds max renders to overlay over some of my graphics in photoshop
oh and even thoguh I use dreamweaver I still code by hand, I just find it much easier to use the code view in dreamweaver than to use notepad...

I use Microsoft Notepad, Paint Shop Pro 8, and FlashFXP. Sometimes if I get confused on the html I will use the wysiwyg editor in Netscape Composer and then look at the html to figure out what I was doing wrong.

just started designing and teaching myself a little while back and tried both frontpage and photoshop. in the end, i found i could easily make better looking sites using photoshop and the lovely little slicing tool.
photoshop slicing makes for nice flowing and clean sites, just a little harder to edit later.

It's funny, all these different peices of software and i can't decide which i use the most.
for webdesign:
notepad my first program!
I do like Note Tab as it is simliar to notepad but saves time by writing clips of script for you but not in the same way wysiwyg editors do - less bulky.
I also use dreamweaver for the css, and i do like the colored script that makes editing easier on my eyes. and when i have a deadline and i can't be bothered its just so much easier.
oh, .... and I really likeand i do recommend cute ftp for on the fly web page editing. No more down and uploading just click and edit and save.
and for graphic design:
photoshop (& image ready) for the slicing, filters and rollovers
fireworks for the filters, design abilities and usability
Illustrator for the design capabilities
I also like drawing things in flash - it just looks smoother somehow
I also use some free graphic editors like Xara 3d.
In fact i think that most software on the market has at least one thing up on all the others so i tend to flit back and forth between all of these programs (and possibly more if i could get my hand on them ) when i'm involved in a web project.
But if i had to choose one - it would be adobe image ready and dreamweaver (god - i'm so lazy! :p ).
I just remember those days when i only had notepad and it used to take me twice and long and the webpages always looked really unprofessional.
But, :) i'm glad i was forced to handcode because now when dreamweaver throws a hissy fit i can just switch to code view and fix it easily, and the same with on the fly too!

As this is in design ;) I'll say what I use to design sites.
Phase 1 is always A3 pad, pencel and eraser, I have a lot of A3 pads floating around.

Seriously? :p
I use Dreamweaver MX 6.0 for just about everything, but only in code view mode (the other mode doesn't exactly support PHP ;)). For images, when I need them, I use Fireworks -- mainly because I can't seem to figure out how to even put anything on the canvas in Photoshop.

My A3 pad also doesn't support PHP (works with pb though) but it can do syntax highliting for any language when used in conjunction with the optional pencil case plugin.
