Howdy folks,
Before I crash for the evening I thought I'd start this discussion off. Why have a website?
Personally, I have a blog, a programming tutorial site, a soon to be released family info site and I'm kinda involved here as well.
My motives are: I enjoy technology, writing and I want to help provide free PHP and mySQL hosting to those who desire it (when I first got started on the Net it was sooo expensive), and I also have the hobby of collecting coins (or notes) :)
I'm really interested in everybodies motives heres so please share what makes you tick.

For me: reputation, and communicating, it's nice to see somthing you made get on the internet. That's why there is AN internet. To show ppl's idea without limits
I have 2 sites right now. One is Brain Productions. That site is there to help people in need. There are tutorials, tools such as menu making stuff, and just overall help. We also make banners for free. We just love helping people. Right now there are only 2 people there.
Then I have Real Effects Studios. It's about Blender 3d, a free 3d program. We make 3d works and just have fun. It's just a place for artists to hang out. I'm not in charge of the site, but i make sure everything such as the forum and stuff runs smoothly.

I just like showing off to everybody else who doesn't have one or has one that sucks so much... After all, most people do not have a website.
I like learning it in my childhood rather than when i'm an adult cause i will be one step ahead of everyone else.

Well I have never had a "solid" site, this I am working on pretty soon it will be up and running smoothly. It is a site that installs scripts for people, free of course, becuase i've realized a lot of new comers don't have a clue what PHP or mySQL is; this is how I was when I came here in late October. Now after only a couple of months I can install all these things simply, I understand FTP and what cPanel is. I have also advanced in graphic design.
So all I want to do is help people learn more on the net by install forums or whatever for them. I also plan to offer free graphic design. (banners only)
So my site can be considered a "n00bie" help site, but in truth it's a teaching sight. I will try to explain a little bit about what I did to the person who's asking me to do something, hopefully sharing some useful knowledge wit them.
Now I understand the above probaly has countless spelling, and grammatical errors, or it just doesn''t make sense, but I hope I got my point across. :)

Well, my shwaza flash site, is just basically because i like making flash stuff, so i like showing it to people, but now, i'm kind of inactive on that account, as i'm working on kingdomsofbattle.com. As for kingdoms of battle, i just like using php and mysql, i like text-based internet games, and i like power, so why not put them together and administrate my own game :)
Why do I work on the web? Because it's fun. And because I think that the web is going to be something important. It already proved to be :) Helping is my favorite thing to do.
I run my website mainly to show off my works, and post my tutorials & examples for the various programming languages I touch on. I was thinking about changing to a more all-purpose website, as I also enjoy writing and poetry...

I know a lot of people in "real life", and none of them have a decent website. With the exception of one I made for a friend :) But no one can seem to do anything more than throw together a quick geocities website, and brag to everyone how good it is. It's fun to tell them just how far they are, and just how far I am.. and make them get off Geocities. When people in my age group around me begin to make good websites, I'll probably be 5 years older (at least) than I am now.

I've had a variety of websites in the past. Most of them were learning exercises, and thus sucked. My best was a website I put up as part of an Unreal Tournament clan. It's still up, but I haven't played in years, so the site hasn't been updated in a while, and a lot of it is broken.
I had a blog for a while. Then I realized that I was just regurgitating news from about the web, and not really saying anything. So, now, I'm in limbo awaiting my transfer to Japan. Then the blog will be reinvented as a photo journal.
Mostly it's still for the opportunity to teach myself something.

uhhh. i started making web sites on geocities and tripod in grade 5 just for my school megazine and hockey stuff, it's very simple-black and white and other basic crap. But soon, i realized that people actually quite interested in my work (just because grade 5s usually dont make web pages). So i went to get those huge gigantic html books from the library and carried it home, which is 5 km away. I just like people to be interested to my work and i like people making suggestion for me.
During these few years, i have no task to do for web pages, but i still juggle around ms frontpage and discovered many new stuff.. i also started using graphic programs half a year ago. I am very excited when i discover new things. Even if there's a tiny mistake in my web page, i will not hestitate to fix it-until is perfect. I love the moment when i just finished my web page-flawless, of course. I am very proud of myself when i can make my dreams come true for web paging. I never thought of showing off my stuff cuz, you know, many people are better than me now.
Now me, jackzhou, canada and a bunch of guys are working on the school's site, and that's another great opportunity for me to learn more new things... you can never learn everything, you just keep learning new things.

I actually made a small site on geocities using a DW template that had a tutorial on how to make pictographs in Excel. I got 1.5 points for it to. :P (I think he though I did the template) :D
Simply re-uploaded tutorial: http://geocities.com/pictographsexcel/

I have two sites, one being a political forum and the second being a graphics design site. I think the main reason i have them is for an outlet, even though I dont get verry many visitors it still makes me feel like i am contributing to the world. And not to mention it is fun to do.

I have a website to sell myself :)
Basically, I love to program. I love to have the ability to want something, then create it. Web design is just a by-product of me learning PHP and SQL. I am horrible at graphic design, and not too creative in the Flash department either. I just love to program.

I made my websites just to make people laugh. If I can get some of my friends or some random people to laugh then it was worth it. Also, just because I enjoy making them.
woooowww!! you guys have uber gr3aaaat motives!! =O

heheh... I am definitely not at the level of computer knowledge as most people here :P though I am steadily getting there thanks to a lot of tips I've read at hostmatrix...
I run a close knit RP forum that is free from invisionfree.com, and then the members started bugging me for a website for all the information about factions, history, etc. So, I folded and joined hostmatrix since I cannot afford paid webhosting for a hobby :) Since then, membership has doubled, which means a lot when every single member is active. I'll probably make another website for myself as an art gallery through which to sell prints and do commissions, but that is still a year or so in the future. So for me... I do it because others want me to, though I must say I really enjoy writing the code and learning new things.

Two reasons...
1) To promote my band (which is basically a serious hobby for me)
2) To give my daughter computer and artistic tasks and be able to see them implemented in a "real world" setting.

Thats a good question B)
I have setup a few sites in my time, but seem to fizzle out a few months into them, Made a sit for my wife on mothers day, set up a christian web site, but got only the front page and one link in and then moved, and guess lost intrest. But as I think back they all had to do with what I wanted, or something that was in self-intrest..Not that thats completely bad, but I lost intrest cause it well I wasnt doing something that would be of intrest to others, Theres dozens of good Christian web sites on the net and the one to my wife was really just an elaborate card  Then(Hope in not boring anyone :) ) I got into a game online, and liked it alot and decided to see what was out there that was Christian based i.e no magic, diffrent races such as trolls, vamps ect.. and just fun mixed with a little truth. And There wasnt much if any outthere that was fun to play.
Well I looked into its PHP and thought "Maybe I can do it" and my wife thought it a good idea too so we are doing it. And she helps with revisions and I edit PHP..So its something we can do together and have some fun.. and not to boast but its turning out pretty good..

I would make a site because I like showing-off. People have teased me thinking I'm stupid. So I'll show em one day. And that's why i want a website and I do.

Mainly three reasons I like Web Design and stuff like that.
1) Bragging is uber greatness
2) I love coding it's great fun
3) You get to see that all that typing turns into something really neat
