SEATTLE, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A juvenile who released an Internet worm directing computers to attack Microsoft's Web site has been sentenced by a federal judge to probation.
The unidentified juvenile admitted releasing the worm RPCSDBOT in August 2003 when he was 14 years old. The action eventually resulted in shutting down the Microsoft Web site for four hours, the Seattle Times reported Saturday.
"Seventeen months ago, I made the worst mistake I ever made in my life," said the juvenile at sentencing Friday. I did it out of curiosity and did not think I would cause any damage. I am sorry I created problems for people I did not even know."
U.S. District Court Judge Robert Lasnik said he took the juvenile's contrition into consideration when determining the sentence.
The youth must also complete 300 hours of community service.
