Whenever I try to install Windows 98 using a boot disk and a win98 cd on my newly formatted hard disk I get a "fault outside MS DoS extender" error. What should I do?

Hmmmm even when reinstalling win98 never had an error.....
Well l`d recommend to reformat your computer... but try to make it FAT32..... If you have no idea how to do this outside of Win98 discs. Search google for format disc or something.... it should be copied onto A: (Floppy Disc)
Note: I take no responsibility for any harm that occurs to you software or hardware on your computer. I in no way am incorporated with you... :P

i had never re-install windows 98 and never owned a windows 98 before, but i had re-install windows me and xp pro... as my experience. :)
i am not sure if these things will help you and i am taking no resposiblity in any loss/damage to your system. (hey, that's what everyone says when they talk about these things) <_<
1.download a compatible boot disk for win98
2.save it on an empty floppy
3.be aware that all of your files and programs will be removed, which means permanently delted. Backup all those files before proceeding the next step
4.put the boot disk into your floppy drive
5.insert the windows 98 disk into your cd rom drive (be sure it is bootable)
6. restart your computer
7. you have to start your computer from the windows 9 setup cd-rom. to do so, you have to change the computer's bios settings. to do so, (well for my computer, i pressed the delete button repeatedly when I hear the "beep" sound during the reboot...
8.If you are starting from the windows 98 setup disk, a windows 98 setup shield will appear, press enter to continue
9. Welcome to setup page, press Enter
10. now you will have to re-partite your drive, use arrow keys to partition your disks, "C" is for create a new partition, and "D" is to delete an excisting partition, you will have to type the size in megabytes that you want to use for the new partition(s)
11. kept on doing step 10 if you need more partitions
12. use the arrow keys to choose the partition where you want to install windows 98, then press enter. then the setup will begin, it usually takes about 10-20 minutes.
13. you will have to select the format option for the partition, then press enter. these are the file systems:
-FAT (quick)
-NTFS (the one i am using right now)
-FAT
-Leave the current systen intact (no changes)
14. there should be no more special things after this step, just follow the instruction and move on! :D :D
15. the installation should take about 30-45 minutes until it finishes
good luck! :P
Another thing you could try is just booting off the CD, that is typically the easiest way. Sounds like you may have a bad boot disk, or possibly not enough RAM. Try setting your BIOS to boot from CD first, and then just boot off the Win 98 CD. That should hopefully fix your problems.

I think shep hit the nail on the head, sounds like you have a corrupt disc. Have a look at the Microsoft knowledgebase (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q87239/)

Hey Julian:
The Windopws 98 CD should be bootable. You are using the Windows 98 CDROM right? That should work fine, and also be bootable. Just set your BIOS boot order to CDROM first, normally by pressing DEL when you turn the computer on.
Good luck

How old is the computer which your trying to install 98 on? Because it isnt supported and your loading it from the start again there might be some hardware conflicts because the hardware is alot newer than the operating system. If you want to go for a OS which doesnt need alot of hardware then go for a linux, something real small.
