I've never even heard of it. Actually, I would probably not have ever heard of it if you didn't just mention it. After looking it up, I'm gussing it's a distribution of Linux. I don't think I'll ever use it though, I would rather use a well-known one like Red Hat, Mandrake, or SuSE...

Kinda off topic, but... Since you were mentioning linux, what exactly is it? I know it's an OS but is it like free or something? And how does it compare to say windows or mac. Does it have a basic desktop and everything like windows?

An idea would be to search Google for it.. or check out the official Linux website (http://www.linux.org). But, for those of you who are too lazy, or have lived in a cave, I'll help you out.

Linux is an open source operating system. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. There are certain distros (distrobutions) of Linux which can be bought. Some distros include, but are not limited to Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, DSL (Damn Small Linux), Knoppix. Linux is much more stable than Windows. It is developed by volunteer programmers who give their time to make it a better OS. Since it is written PUBLICALLY, the source code is open for ALL TO SEE. The servers here at HM run LINUX. Most webservers out there probably run Linux since it is more flexable and more secure. Most hackers/crackers target Windows machines since approx. 3/4 the population uses some version of it. I suggest you do more research if you really care. You will learn more, and I won't waste my time giving more information that a simple Google search will turn up.

Yea Linux is quite interesting, one thing I don't understand that becuase its under the GNU how do some people charge people for it? (E.g, Redhat) Although Redhat does have Feodora(free version).

Don't the people that charge for Linux use the same base code?

The kernel (the basis) of Linux is released under the GNU liscense, so that everyone can get the main part of the OS open-source. However, once it's modified, and made a whole lot different, the programmer can do whatever they want to it, and even sell it (RedHat) A lot of people follow the "free OS" Linux tradition, though, and make their distributions under GNU too.

Because Linux is pretty comlicated, they make money by charging for the traning, which is unlike Windows, which any idiot can figure out how to use...

Anyone who isnt afraid to use some command line commands and some more complicated options within the OS then go for Linux, its real good. I have a Web & FTP server hosted on it through a networked router. If anyone has any questions about settings it up, apache or FTP il be willing to help. PM me or email me mark@fightinglimits.co.uk
