I read conflicting information about mega tags. I use them all the time because it's better to have than not to have and suffer for it.

Anyway, some people say mega tags don't do anything to improve ranking, while other people swear by it. Can anyone put this debate to an end once and for all?

Do megatags help, or not?

Scribe,

First of all, its meta tags and not mega tags.

So meta tags were once used to analyse the contents of an html page, just like we use comments in a C or php program. So once they helped html coders in this manner. They will not be displayed in design and so.

But when the early search engines came, their algorithms used to read the meta tags so as to find the contents of the particular page. With the ever researching field of search algorithms, meta tags' importance has weared off. But defenitely meta tag analysis is still a part of search engine algorithms, but with so much other factors.

You cannot take your site to top 10 by just having a keyword rich meta tag, but that defenitely adds up.

Its better to have a content rich meta tag than not to.

I personally haven't made meta tags in a while, because phpNuke makes them for me by reading the contents of my pages. Pretty nifty.

The problem with that is they don't seem to do much, but other than that they have no harmful side affects

well, if you'd like them to work, you could always post your code here and someone could fix it for you... but personally, i would just get rid of them... meta tags are kinda useless now

:o Oops, sorry!

Anyway, I'm really surprised that people don't use them anymore. I don't know, if they are causing no harm, I think I'll keep them.

Hey...

Its best to have Meta-Tags because they do, do something. They are abit outdated but if your web site is being posted all around the internet with differnet portals and web engines then you dont know if they are using Meta-Tags or not.

For example the Google empire hasnt used Meta-Tags they use the content of the page. So just put all your key words at the bottom of the page and turn the font colour into the background colour. This way you have all your key words and your site still looks good...

Heres a really good search engine / portal poster....
