Do these "Submit your URL and we'll upload them to all the bigtime search sites!" really work? I've seen a lot of them lately, where they will charge you money. I'm not falling for it quite so fast....

Well, use a free service; there's nothing to lose :) And generally they do work to some extent... even if your site doesn't get submitted to a major search engine like google cuz a lot of the major SEs index the smaller ones.
Also, just so you know, yahoo and search engines that use yahoo technology (quite a few) don't accept automated submissions, so these services don't work with those SEs.

Well, you'll find out in a few weeks :)
If your site is listed, then it's good :D

I've seen a few of them. I don't trust them. Besides, I want to display my page differently on differnet Engines. Automated may be easier, but nothing beats the old fashioned way.

As number guy said, find some free submitter and submit your site. Nothing to lose.
If they really submit your site, atleast you get a back link if not a high position in search engines.

From many webmaster forums, where I'm frequent, they dont recommend free submissions and s/ws. All of them say to submit major SE's manually.
Don't know the exact reason though.

Maybe some search engines chagne the registeration forms and many other details. Thats why maybe.
Or maybe, if the search engines note the remote_addr, then...
