I've seen long URL names, that are not covered by a true domain name! I don't know if you're shy putting out the money for a fancy.com domain name, but have you guys checked out www.dot.tk ?? They offer FREE .tk domains, straight up, no catches. I registered my site with this URL... www.ekkpaintball.tk
Am I the only one with word of this domain name, or do you all already know this, lol.

They are real and I've heard of them before.. They are located in some islands.. can't remember the name, ask LogicalDemise.. anyway, for some reason, I'm unable to view any .tk domains.. even the dot.tk domain itself. Not sure why..

I have been using a a domain there for a few months now and not had any problems. I turned off the banner and pop-up ads. My site www.geoscience.tk (which has practically no content) is about geoscience techniques, so I think the "tk" works. (phonetically at least...)
I've also just setup up anothre domain with the (www.argiletum.tk) that links to my host matrix page.
Their email forwarding seems to work fine as well. When you are just setting things up and experimenting with ideas its great to have access to free domain names...

Does the .tk domain just forward you to your actuall site? and is there any catches such as adds or pop ups?

Well, actually, most ppl dont know that you could "switch" off the ads on the .tk domains.

and they have email forwarding (or did I mentioned that?).
Either way, I am still gobsmacked at how easy it is to set up - you can have a domain name in a matter on minutes and you don't even really need to give any personal information.
I agree there is a bit of a status thing though, and it remains to be seen if any really good .tk sites will emerge...
Are there any other completely free, ad-free options out there?
Why get a .tk domain for free when you can spend a measly $8 for a .com domain?

You can always break frames using simple elementary javascript.
Also, http://www.co.nr is another domain provider. Ofcourse, it provides- http://yourdomain.co.nr . But thats good enough.

Isn't that sort of against their ToS? It's not worth risking getting the account deleted... especially if the website becomes popular and people know only the abridged URI.

There is an option in Marketing link on the domain management links. You can easily disable ads from there. Hence, disabling ads is not illegal.
As for breaking frames, i dont think its illegal. Why should it be.

As soon as I have the chance to buy a real domain I will. I just have to convince my parents that it's a good investment. Even if my .tk account does run out though, I have my site set up so that the .tk domain directs to a small "splash" screen that is only needed to break out of that domain (when you refresh a page within a .tk website for instance, it goes back to the index.html page) so if they suddenly deactivate my account, I'm only out of a small splash screen... most users will know the hostmatrix.org subdomain anyways.

The free domain service is excellent. I have my site running on it. www.chows2k4.tk . the thing is actually a redirection to your original site. You can configure your site such that it has no ads from dot.tk . by default the ads are on and u'll have to switch them off and u'll get a ad free domain. it's worth using coz it has begun getting famous day by day. i strongly recommend u this if u can't afford a .com or something like that

There is no actual replacement to a real domain. Yeah, the redirections are good, but just nowhere close to as good as owning a domain urself.
Alright, consider you want to create a site foo.tk . Yeah, most ppl will remember that. But consider, they reach a certain page on ur site, and they wanna know the address, then it becomes a bit difficult for average users. (by average, i mean ppl who are quite new to the net and all).
Also, has any1 tried the email forwarding. That damm thing never worked for any of my once 3 domains.
thanks but redirection really sucks

*sigh* Do you really think the Tolekau islands are going to confirm your address? No. So it's not going to hurt anything by telling them you live on 7436 West Street in Toontown, Ohio. Get my drift?

In case anyone wants to know how to break out of dot.tk's frames, put this in your <body> tag:
onload="if (self != top) top.location.href = self.location.href"
For example:
<body color="red" vlink="blue" onload="if (self != top) top.location.href = self.location.href">

I did get a .tk domain name before buying a .com domain. And its useless! They put frames on my site and add their annoying ads! I just prefer to pay 30 new zealand dollars for a .com domain than suffer workarounds or whatnot.

If you've read above, you'll notice that you can disable ads (anyway, Firefox and Opera blocks them), and that there are ways to remove frames. I was testing that onClick code I posted before which removes the frame, and it successfully removes it on dot.tk, see here (http://www.mudscript.tk) (the errors have nothing to do with dot.tk, they are just general PHP ones (see (http://www.zaltan.hostmatrix.org/))).
One question: how exactly do you get to the page to disable ads? I can't actually tell if my site already has them or not, because I use Opera.

I don't know if anyone posted this before, but co.nr is also good, even though you have to put a mini-banner on your site, it seems more reliable than .tk because... well... the sites look much better. From time to time, they might not accept new sign-ups, but it's... still good.

Is the "mini banner" a banner at the top/bottom of the page, automatically implemented, or can you just put a little image and link wherever you like on your website?

You can disable the popup in your .tk site administration thing, under 'Marketing'...

I could have something to do with the frames. What browser are you using? What happens when you view the source code?
Youpo

I wouldn't pick .tk domain. I tryed and I don't like it. Though it has the shortest domain thing, there are a few catches. Like pop up ads and sometimes the site is down or poor support. See here: http://www.free-url-redirection.com.ru/Free_Domain_Name/
You can opt. out of the pop up you mentioned Youpo.
They are slow to respond sometimes but the address you get from them is free and can be very short.
To opt. out of the banner go to my.dot.tk and login to your account.
Then click Dot TK Linker Promo (http://my.dot.tk/cgi-bin/rnt04.taloha) and then click Continue and then tic the radio button labeled, "no banner". After that continue until you get to the conformation page and you're done. No more banner or popup.
